The Department of Economic Development is working with the Council of Yukon First Nations (CYFN) to provide hands-on support to businesses in rural Yukon communities to develop their online presence.
This partnership developed the E-Commerce Yukon Project, which is designed to increase the use of e-commerce in Yukon communities by assisting small businesses to leverage the Internet as a buying and selling platform.
The e-Commerce Yukon Project aims to achieve the following:
Through the e-Commerce Yukon Project a business advisor is contracted to spend a week at a time in each of the selected Yukon communities and is available to meet with clients during weekdays and weekends, days and evenings. The advisor provides custom-tailored assistance based on each individual client’s objectives, type of business, and level of expertise.
ICT learning is achieved through a one-on-one, hands-on approach. The advisor sits beside each client to work through the implementation process, providing assistance when necessary. Whenever possible, clients are challenged to figure out the processes on their own since this approach reinforces learning best.
In 2011, the E-Commerce Yukon Project will continue to assist small businesses, including artists and artisans, to build a sustainable online presence. In addition, the project will conduct surveys to assess the utilization and effectiveness of e-commerce in each community.
