Technology and Telecommunications Development Report

In February 2013, Economic Development Minister Currie Dixon, on behalf of the Government of Yukon, announced the creation of a Technology and Telecommunications Development Directorate within the Department of Economic Development to bring together and focus the government's activities related to the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector and the telecommunications environment.

The new directorate will be a two-year pilot project with a mandate to develop and implement the recommendatons coming out of two recent reports on the state and future of the ICT sector and telecommunications in Yukon: the Yukon ICT Sector Strategy Report was developed by the Business Development Bank of Canada as a result of a project lead by the Yukon Information Technology and Industry Society, for which funding was provided by the Government of Yukon; and the Yukon Telecommunications Development Report, commissioned by the Government of Yukon and completed by Lemay-Yates and Associates.

It was also announced that the new directorate will undertake a bankable feasibility study of a redundant fibre optic link to the South through Juneau, Alaska, to complement the current fibre optic link that keeps Yukon connected to the telecommunications network in southern Canada.

The Government of Yukon remains focused on ensuring the availability, reliability and affordability of telecommunications services and the sustainable growth of the ICT sector in Yukon.
